β’ De facto segregation used to describe situations whereby legislation did not aegregate students by race, but segregation occured as a result of the mindset of people and hence, school segregation continued. De facto segregation was caused as a result of the refusal of White homeowners to sell to African-American purchasers, discrimination by real estate agents or because White and Black families choose to live in neighborhoods where majority of their own race lived.
β’ De jure segregation is discrimination of people which is backed by law. Apartheid law in South Africa that separated Blacks from Whites is an example of de jure segregation.
β’ Public attitude has a vital role to play in resegregation. When there is discrimination as a result of color, race or religion, it can lead to resegregation.
