Neural tube defects are birth defects of the brain and spine.

Explanation:

Neural tube abnormalities are brain, spine or spinal cord birth defects. These occur during the first month of pregnancy, sometimes even before a woman knows she's expecting. Spina bifida, and anencephaly are the two most common neural tube defects.

The fetal spinal column does not close properly at spina bifida. CDC advises all women of reproductive age to consume 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, in contrast to eating a varied diet of folate foods, to help avoid neural tube defects (NTDs).
