An airplane at a constant altitude of 2 miles flies a horizontal distance toward you at constant velocity. At the start of your observation, the angle of elevation is 40 degrees. Fifteen seconds later, the angle of elevation is 50 degrees. What is the approximate velocity of the airplane in miles per minute?

A. 0.1 miles per minute
B. 0.7 Miles per minute
C. 2.8 Miles per minute
D. 10.6 Miles per minute

Thank you!

Respuesta :

I think the answer is 2.8 miles per minute.

The approximate velocity of the airplane in miles per minute is 2.8 miles per minute which is option c.

What is velocity?

Velocity is basically the distance covered in a particular time. It is  expressed in two units like km per second.

How to calculate velocity?

We have been given that airplane has an altitude of 2 miles per altitude. It forms a right angled triangle. We can calculate the distance between airplane and person which is as under.

tan 40°=2/ Distance

Distance=2/ 0.84

=2.38

Distance between person and airplane before 15 seconds is 2.38 miles.

Now we have to calculate the distance betweeen airplane and person which is as under:

tan 50°=2/ distance

Distance=2/tan 50°

=2/1.191

=1.68

Distance between person and airplane after 15 seconds is 1.68 miles.

Difference between both distances is the distance covered by airplane during those 15 seconds=2.38-1.68=0.70

Velocity=Distance/time

=0.70/15

=0.046 per second

But we need in per minute unit.

1 minute=60 second so velocity in per minute is 0.046*60=2.76.

Approximate the number we get 2.78.

Hence the velocity of the airplane is 2.78 per minute which is option c.
