The spark is more likely to occur while the switch is being opened to disconnect the circuit .This because this spark is cause when one end of the key at a high potential and the other end is at a lower potential, this will cause an electric field to be formed between them and this electric field would in turn ionize the air between the two point of the key causing a spark
