A licism of many population ecologists that the pattern of population increase and subsequent crash of the deer population would have occurred even if the bounty had not been placed on the predators. Do you agree or disagree with this statement. Explain your reasoning.

Respuesta :

Answer: Disagree

Explanation:

I tend to disagree with this statement because predators actually have a place in ecosystems to keep prey species from becoming overpopulated, hence, the extent of the overpopulation would likely have been much less if the natural predators were allowed to play a role in controlling the deer population.

There exist a positive relationship between natural predators and prey.  I disagree with the statement because predators play a significant role in regulating their prey population size, avoiding its overgrowth.

------------------------------

In the absence of predator, deer population would have probably increased in size until reaching its carrying capacity.

  • The population reaches a maximum point delimited by available resources, such as food or space. This point is known as the carrying capacity, K.

  • K is a constant that equals population size at the equilibrium point, in which the natality and the mortality rate get equal to each other.

However, in the presence of its predator, the deer population decreases. This is the predator-prey relationship, in which predators play a significant role in regulating deer population.

The predator-prey cycle refers to predators population affecting the dinamic of prey population, and viceversa. Population sizes increase and decrease en these cycles.

  • When the prey -deer- lives in an environment with no predators, it shows a significant growth rate.

  • Deer can grow, develop, and reproduce, increasing its population size.

  • The more available deers there are, the more predator there will be.

  • The predator population increase in size, and affects the prey populations, leading it to decrease.

  • So there are fewer available deers to prey on.

The prey population also affects the predator population.

  • After the increase in the predator population size, the number of available prey decreases.

  • The more predators there are, the fewer prey there will be left.

  • The predator population decreases due to the item's lack.

According to this theoretical framework, the crash of the deer population would have not occurred in the absence of predators.

Probably, in the absence of the predator, deer would have reached the carrying capacity and remained there.

But in the presence of a predator, the deer population decreased because of the predator-prey relationship.

I disagree because predators play a significant role in regulating their prey population size, avoiding its overgrowth.
