minutes for sick visit denoted as y
The equation of Tuesday visit is [tex]3x + 2y = 189 minutes ------ 1[/tex]
The equation of Wednesday visit is [tex]3x + 1y = 168 minutes ------ 2[/tex]
by changing the signs of the equation 2 and subtract it from the equation 1 we will get 1y = 21 minutes
to substitute y =1 in the equation 2 we get
[tex]3x + 2(21) = 189[/tex]
[tex]3x + 42 = 189[/tex]
[tex]3x = 189 - 42[/tex]
[tex]3x = 147[/tex]
[tex]x = 147 ÷ 3 = 49 minutes[/tex]
then now we have substitute both x = 49 and y= 21 in equation ----- 2
