Edwards became known widely for his fiery sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," which implored parishioners to embrace the teachings of Jesus Christ before they were banished to hell as nonbelievers. During the fiery Great Awakening, Edwards became a lighting rod for a movement that became a widespread religious revival.
