The correct answer is A. In Spanish, the present-tense verbs for 'to compete' are considered to be stem-changing verbs because sometimes, when 'e' is stressed, it is then changed to 'ie'. A stem-changing verb is a verb in which the stem changes predictably when the word is conjugated.
