Thermals energy is the energy that is generated and measured by heat. If the pot is hot from being on a stove there is heat making the thermal energy higher than the room temperature cup of water.
A pot of water, a pot (assuming metal) is a great conductor compared to a cup of water. You can measure the heat and basically it’ll prove to you that the thermal energy greatly increased.
