LaFeber though that the cause of the Cold War was because the Russians were worried about the growing amount of Western forces entering Russia and Eastern Europe, while Gaddis though that the Cold War was a result of Russia having more of an opportunity to spread their communist beliefs and the US was getting worried. Basically, LaFeber thought that the Cold War was the Russians being defensive, and Gaddis though that the Cold War was the US being defensive.

As per Gaddis, neither the US nor the Soviet Union alone were responsible for starting the cold war, instead, both acted as major power and were trying to protect their security and interests.
