Dear xxxx

Coming on this trip has perhaps been the worst mistake of my life, truly. The trail is absolutely disheartening, and I find myself actually missing you, a feat I had not believed possible. Am I only saying this to dissuade you from stealing all the gold from me? You've always had better luck than me, finding 10 four-leaf clovers when I found one. There is barely any greenery let alone clovers, and is unbearably hot here on the Santa Fe trail. If you decide to travel westward, try your hand at another route. I am at least glad we made it through the winter. The temperature went from freeze-your-fingers off cold to absolutely boiling. We are running low on supplies, especially water, but I know we should be coming up on a river soon. We have not encountered any indian attacks yet.

I must go, now. We must have all hands on deck to try to ford this river. Despite the lack of rain, it still worries me, as the current is strong. I doubt I would be able to write to you again until winter of 1870, so do not fret at my lack of communication. Wish me luck and gold and a prosperous existence!

Your xxxx,

xxxx
