This is a paragraph from an online history course. What main idea does the paragraph develop? In the late 1700s, European explorers found a stone tablet imbedded in the wall of an Egyptian temple. Later known as the Rosetta Stone, the artifact was carved with a decree, or order, proclaiming that the current ruler was the rightful ruler and should be followed without question. Before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, we knew a lot less about the ancient Egyptians. The symbols carved into the Rosetta Stone provided the same information in three different ways; with hieroglyphics, in Demotic writing, and again in Greek. Historians already knew how to read Greek, so they used this knowledge to develop a “key” for translating the hieroglyphics on the stone. Using their new understanding of hieroglyphic symbols, archeologists could read the hieroglyphics left by the ancients in temples and tombs all over Egypt. A. The Rosetta Stone was found in the late 1700s by European explorers. B. The Rosetta Stone was a decree that was carved into the side of a temple. C. The Rosetta Stone became the key to understanding ancient Egypt. D. The Rosetta Stone as an artifact was studied by many historians.
