During his reign, he built Hagia Sophia. Theodora became an empress alongside her husband, Emperor Justinian I, from 527 CE in the Byzantine Empire. When the bubonic plague spread it struck the empire capital Constantinople in the spring of 542 CE. Justinian I became infected and the empire held and ruled by Empress Theodora alone.
