In  Doris Lessing's "Through the Tunnel," Jerry becomes annoyed when the older kids ignore him and decides he will cross the tunnel like they had done to impress them.

He goes to great lengths to achieve his goal: he weighed himself with rocks to practice holding his breath and, when her mother announced they were leaving soon, he swam under it even though he has not truly ready.
