The best way to get the readers' interest would be "showing that the main character has a problem to solve" but more than that, is how it was done and explaining the steps taken by the protagonist.

A good story depends a lot too the writer to know to whom he/she is writing for (the expected public) and how the events are presented to the readers based in that perspective.
