Houston, Texas Missions in San Antonio The San Antonio Missions are a collection of mission complexes in southern Texas that are close to the San Antonio River basin.

Five similar complexes are dispersed around the basin. They are from the first half of the eighteenth century.

Many of these religious complexes were constructed by the colonial Spaniards in an effort to convert American Indians and make them Spanish citizens. The complexes were also used as fortifications.

The Spanish Catholic settlers in the area were served by the missions.

Mexican Florida When Juan Ponce de Leon set out in search of the "Fountain of Youth," Spanish Florida was born.

The territory was thought to cover a huge portion of what is now the southern United States and be significantly larger than modern-day Florida.
