The Ancient Greek, Zeno, founded the Greek Stoic philosophy, which says that, if people want to reach happiness, then, they need to follow reason, not emotions. If they could be calm and logical about tough situations and think of the greater good, they would be able to accept challenging problems and do their duty according to the natural law. The Romans were a little more practical with their philosophy. Romans liked the philosophy of stoicism, which encourages people to follow the mind to understand the world rather than emotions that may lead to unhappiness. If a person is not distracted by fear, greed, or insecurity, that person is more likely to be happy. Roman stoics exercised this philosophy to government and to the people of the empire. One of the followers of this philosophy was Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome. Stoicism had waves of popularity, and one of the most important elements was civic duty. The relationship between government and its citizens was of utmost importance. It called upon the efforts of citizens in creating and preserving a balanced, sound, and democratic government.
