Answer: he stays alive for hope and freedom. Hope that his family was still alive and that he could be free one day. It’s kind of ironic because at the end he basically just lets his father die. His father and him were staying alive and hoping together but then his father just gives up and dies. He knows his mother and siblings are dead so he just lost the last of his hope that his family will survive the camps. Also in the book he says he stayed alive out of luck he wasn’t particularly heroic or anything.
