Thomas is really struggling. On one hand, he knows he should stop using illegal drugs because they are harmful and illegal. Freud would say that this is his ego.

Freud’s behavioral analysis showed 3 parts of the Psyche. The ID is the animal that wants what it wants now, and will do anything to get it. The super ego is like the mommy of the group. It punishes the group by making them feel guilt and shame. The ego is the rational thinker. It takes everything into account while trying to fulfill the ED and the Super Ego.
