Foreshadowing refers to a literary device in which the author gives the reader a hint of what is going to happen later in the story. In the case of "Secret in Slovakia," the author employs foreshadowing in order to let us know more about Aunt Gertrude. Initially, the aunt appears to be very nice, and the setting idyllic. However, as the story progresses, the author's use of foreshadowing hints at the idea that there is something sinister about Aunt Gertrude.
