One of the ways in which the author of "Secret in Slovakia" employs foreshadowing is in order to suggest that the impressions the characters have at the beginning are not the same ones that they will have at the end. When the story begins, we learn that the speaker is slightly scared by the house. The house is old and big and has an eerie feeling. However, through foreshadowing, the author tells us that the speaker will soon change his mind: "Two days later, when we left, I would look at the house in the daylight and think it was very charming. Right then, I wanted nothing more than to find the inside much less frightening than the outside." Therefore, the author uses foreshadowing in order to suggest to the reader that the speaker will undergo a transformation in his way of thinking.
