Britain warships were sent to take over New Netherlands

New Netherlands

On August 27, 1664, a fleet of four British warships under the command of Colonel Richard Nicolls sailed to the port of New Amsterdam (now New York) and demanded that Peter Stuyvesant, the general manager of the Dutch colony of New Holland, will deliver the colony to the British. The surpassed Stuyvesant had no choice but to accept, and under English rule Nicolls became the first governor of the province by the name of New York.
