Answer:

The Compromise of 1850 allowed California to enter the United States as a free state. The Compromise of 1850 was made up of five bills that attempted to resolve disputes over slavery in new territories added to the United States in the wake of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). California entered the Union as the 16th free state. While in exchange, the south was guaranteed that no federal restrictions on slavery would be placed on Utah or New Mexico. The Compromise of 1850 overturned the Missouri Compromise and left the overall issue of slavery unsettled.
