a) the exposure to harsh weather. Many pioneers and settlers at this time struggles with the disastrous weather conditions including extended winters and strong winds. The west part of the US differed tremendously (geography wise) than that of the East thus the instances of horrendous weather throughout the seasons both the pioneers and settles overcame alike.
