He feels that he has lost hope and that he must find a way to change and reverse what he has done. I don't have a copy of the story but that's what I remember hope this helped.
Throughout the story Scrooge has many feelings about his situation. At first he’s fine with the place where he’s at and he doesn’t mind being alone. But as the story evolves he changes as well and he realizes he doesn’t want to be alone he wants to have a family and be surrounded by people that love and appreciate him
