The living organisms of an ecosystem are related through food chains, which gives rise to trophic levels in an ecosystem. There is a flow of energy from one trophic level to the other in a food chain. Producers bring energy from the sun into the community. Primary consumers eat the producers, which makes them herbivores in most communities. Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers, which makes them carnivores. Tertiary consumers eat the secondary consumers. A final link in the food chain are decomposers, which break down the organic matter of the tertiary consumers (or whichever consumer is at the top of the chain) and release nutrients into the soil. Thus, there is flow of energy from Sun ------> Producer ------> Herbivore -------> Carnivore ------> Decomposers.

Energy flows through an ecosystem in the following order:

Sun ----> Producer ---> Primary consumer ---> Secondary consumer ---> Tertiary consumer ---> Decomposer.

  • Some of the energy from the sun is fixed by the producer through a process known as photosynthesis. The producers are usually green plants and photosynthetic bacteria.
  • Primary consumers feed directly on the producers.
  • Secondary consumers feed on the primary consumers.
  • Tertiary consumers feed on the secondary consumers.
  • The decomposers feed on the remains of the tertiary consumers.

As the energy flows from producer to the different consumers, and to the decomposer, only about 10% of the energy available in each trophic level move to the next with the rest being lost to heat.

Hence, an energy pyramid is created as we move from the lower trophic level to higher trophic levels.
