Rivers contributed to civilizations by allowing the people in the town or city to irrigate water from the river from farming and allowing them to fish and travel by boat up and down the river. It also provides fresh water for the city or town to drink.
Rivers gave a permanent source of water for drinking and agriculture. They were also a source of food and transport. The soil around rivers also tends to be fertile because of flooding, which would make it good farmland.
