Russians also considered marriage important for the sake of financial stability.   Love was something that people rarely considered. Lomov's decision to marry Natalya definitely isn't motivated by love. He wants to marry her because he views marriage as a necessity. Similarly, Natalya chooses to marry Lomov not because she loves him, but because she wants to secure her financial future.

Chekhov sheds light on the nature of marriage as it existed in his society. He uses the mismatched pair of Natalya ans Lomov to show that marriage was no more than a business arrangement. It was guided by the nedd for financial security rather than love and romance.
