I think that the shadow archetype can cause much more pain and strife toward the hero. They tend to gain the trust of the hero and make them feel comfortable. However, when it is no longer beneficial to them they will stab the hero in the back so to speak. As a result of this, the hero has another obstacle to overcome to achieve their goal. An example of a shadow archetype would be Catwoman from the DC comics, she often goes back and forth between villains and heroes causing nobody to trust her and commonly she betrays them when they are no longer useful to her.
