  • When we can't simplify a root under variable further or we can't remove the root sign that is called surd.It may be a square root or cube root or n th root .They are especially called irrational numbers.

Ex:-

[tex]\\ \rm\longmapsto \sqrt{9}=3[/tex]Hence its not a surd.

but

.

[tex]\\ \rm\longmapsto \sqrt{3},\sqrt{7}[/tex]Are surds.

There are six types of surds such as :

  1. Simple surds
  2. Pure Surds
  3. Similar Surds
  4. Mixed Surds
  5. Compound Surds
  6. Binomial Surds.
