David Hume argued that a person's perceptions remained inaccessible to the self and another person because the impressions and ideas were personal but could not be evaluated by the self that was always changing.

  • The self, which is illusive and unstable, should be at the center of personal perceptions.  As such, it is almost impossible to decipher another person's perceptions or even yours because the self does not exist in the real sense.

  • Perceptions remain integral to the person without an outsider's knowledge and explanation.

Thus, Hume makes it clear that you cannot discern my sensual thoughts nor can I discern yours.
