You should ideally wear a helmet or some other type of face/head protection, because the brain, arguably one of the most important organs in your body, can get damaged rather easily.
Additionally, some padding/armor for the joints couldn't hurt either. After all, those places are also easily damagable, and you wouldn't want to dislocate your shoulder or your knee, while playing such intense sports.
In short, choosing the proper equipment limits trips to the hospital, becasue most of your injuries will be minimalized by your protective gear.
