This is not to say that he didn't feel guilty about abandoning his strict Hindu beliefs, he mentions that “Lord, to think that I'm a strict vegetarian..I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible”. But he realizes that his survival is much more important than his faith. Instead of being unhappy that there is an animal carcass at his feet, he is glad that there is at least something to eat. By abandoning his principles, he much rather wanted to live.
