The main cause was the north (Union aka the yankees/ og america) wanted to abolish slavery, and the south (confederates aka the dixies/ new america) wanted to keep it.

the 3 sub causes were

economic interests,

cultural values,

the power of the federal government to control the states,

ALSO the country got divided when abraham lincoln became president as he won the north and his opponent won the south. both sides saw their winner as the president and the other side as the fake one.

It is important to study history because it allows to not make the same mistakes.
