Respuesta :

In the Lottery by Shirley Jackson, the story begins as a normal event where villagers gather. But there is a contrast between the readers' and the characters' views of the lottery. This is illustrated in the statement;

  • The laughing and joking amongst the  villagers before the lottery selection  begins makes the story's final outcome  that much more horrifying for readers.

"The lottery" is a horrible event where one person in the village is sacrificed to the gods to appease them and make the farming season more fruitful.

The nature of this event was not displayed in the character of the villagers who were excited at the onset of this story.

This makes the final part of the story horrible to the reader who later discovers the purpose of the lottery.
