- Introduction of Bill of Rights supporting freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom from standing armies, trial by jury, and habeas corpus and guaranteeing personal liberties.
- In the precursor to first amendment , he supported freedom of religion and explained how the right of freedom of religion was a natural right of mankind.
- He was the defender of freedom of conscience and created a wall of separation between the church and the State.
- He was against the laws like Sedition act and Alien act which was creating a violation of freedom of speech.
