1. The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States. Generally, before the war, the United States had taken more of an isolationism approach to to wars that occurred in other nations besides the US. Interestingly, at the end of the war, the United States won, with control of some of Spain's properties.

2. At the beginning of World War II, the United States was determined to maintain a neutral position. However, due to the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor, the United States was forces to join the war. The United States paid for their part in the war heavily in casualties, but they were victorious.
