Food comes in an endless number of options, each of which contains numerous molecular compounds of varying kinds. Every molecular compound that we ingest through the food that we eat can have distinct effects on the body, some of these compounds include:

Macromolecules are a class of molecules that encompass many others. Proteins and lipids are just some of the examples mentioned that fall within the class of macromolecules. Some macromolecules can be good for the body, such as proteins, whilst others can cause some negative effects as is the case with lipids.
Lipids are vital for the proper functioning of the body. Lipids provide a source of reserve energy and can regulate hormones, among other important functions. However, lipids can also be harmful to your health. Lipids provide reserve energy by being stored as fat. Excessive consumption of lipids can cause numerous health problems.
Carbohydrates are at the same level as lipids in terms of their effect on the body. Carbohydrates are sugars, which are necessary to include in a healthy diet, however, excessive consumption of carbohydrates can cause health issues ranging from diabetes to pancreatic failure.
Proteins are amongst the most essential macromolecules for the human body. They provide a variety of functions which include:
- Maintaining pH levels
- Repairing tissue
- Aid in the production of antibodies
- Allow metabolic reactions to take place
among many others. This, along with nucleic acids are a prime example of "you are what you eat" in that those who consume more of these (coupled of course with proper exercise) tend to be healthier individuals.
