The Marbury v. Madison is one of the most famous court cases in the United States that occurred in the year 1803.
This judicial dispute arose as a result of the presidential elections of 1800, in which Thomas Jefferson (of Republican-Democratic ideology) defeated then-President John Adams (of Federalist ideology)
During the last days of the Adams administration, various judicial positions were established as justices of the peace for the District of Columbia. This process required three steps.
However, these three steps were not fulfilled in the case of four judges(one of them William Marbury). This caused Marbury to go to the Supreme Court to order Madison to hand over his record.
Chief Justice John Marshall resolved this dilemma by deciding that the Supreme Court was not empowered to decide this case. Therefore, Marshall ruled that Section 13 of the Judicial Law was unconstitutional because it expanded the original jurisdiction of the Court from the jurisdiction defined by the same Constitution.
By deciding not to intervene in this particular case, the Supreme Court assured his position as the final arbiter of the law.
