In order to create suspense for their readers, authors often wish to hint where the story is going. At the same time, she doesn't wish to give away the ending. This is called
Foreshadowing. Oregon State University defines foreshadowing as "a narrative device in which suggestions or warnings about events to come are dropped or planted."
