The movement of these bones causes fluid within the cochlea to move, resulting in movement of the basilar membrane.
To hear:
- Sound waves pass through the external auditory canal from the outer ear(pinna) to reach the Ear drum (tympanic membrane). The sound is amplified here causing the ear drum to vibrate and sets the auditory ossicles(bones malleus, incus, and stapes) to motion.
- The tiny stapes bone connects the middle ear to the inner ear since it attaches to the oval window , therefore its motion transfer waves to the fluids of the cochlea.
- As the fluids move, the trigger the nerve endings in the basilar membrane to vibrate and return nerve impulses to the brain making hearing possible.
