Harka Gurung unfortunately died in the year 2006 along with 23 other people  in a tragic helicopter crash at Phale in Taplejung-in far Eastern Nepal- whilst returning from a conservation meeting. The 2011 Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival was dedicated to his memory, and Lamjung Football Club created a memorial football tournament in his honor.

Harka Gurung was a renowned scholar who wrote and published 15 books and published over 700 research articles in various fields covering anthropology development, economy,geography, mountaineering, sociology and tourism.

After Gurung completed his PhD, he worked at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London as a Research Fellow and returned to Nepal in 1966 to take up a lecturing post at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu. He was the first PhD holder in Nepal.
