This refers to the grasslands which can be found in North America which is between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains.
With this in mind, we can see that the soils were unstable and people tried to use crop rotation, terrace sloping land and afforestation to try and maintain the soil but all proved abortive.
However, nature intervened in the way of extended droughts, hot temperatures which helped to stabilise the soil a bit even though it turned it to the Dust Bowl.
