- In 1933, one of the female students of the John Hopkins medical school, one of the early female graduates gave the skeleton to the Mattatuck museum.
- In 1970, the skeleton was removed from public display out of respect for his remains and the sensibilities of the community as a reminder that slavery existed.
With this in mind, we can see that there was a difference in the treatment of Fortune's skeleton treatment in the 1933's and the 1970's which reflected respect and obeisance.
