For a student that is writing a science research paper for one of his/her science courses in college, the best literature to use would be secondary.
The literature that can be consulted for research are of 3 types:
Primary literature are original research with raw data that are yet to be analyzed and conclusion drawn from.
Secondary literature are those research literature whose data has been analyzed, interpreted and conclusions drawn.
Tertiary literature are those that index primary/secondary literature.
Thus, for a college student, it is best to get information from secondary literature in which analysis and conclusions have been made about the data.
