The atom consists of 3 particles: proton and neutron in the core, and electron in the outside of the nucleus. Except neutrons, p and e have charges, postive and negative respectively. They react with other charges of atoms of other substances, and form different things. In many chemical calculations, atomic masses and such are vital.
