Please note that if the "hanger" is cut off the following is not true,
a. 11 = 10x
This is showing that 11 is equal to whatever is on the other side since the "hanger" is level. Think of it as a scale (picture attached, the image is from https://antiques.lovetoknow.com/antique-balance-scales).
We know that one side of the equation will be equal to 11. The other side will be 2x multiplied by 5 because there are five "2x" parts. 5 * 2 = 10, so 5 * 2x = 10x
b. x = 1.1
11 = 10x
10x = 11
x = [tex]\frac{11}{10}[/tex]
x = 1.1
