1As a new employee of Cait’s Café, you will soon take pride in the delicious coffees and snacks you create. In order for our employees and customers to have a safe, happy time at our shop, you must be aware of dangers in the store. Sections that are of particular concern are the stockroom, the customer seating area, and the area behind the counter. 2When weekly shipments of coffee beans arrive, you will need to use the ladder to place them on the shelves in the stockroom. Take the ladder from its place on the wall and stand it so that it clicks open. This sound tells you it is securely locked. Never climb on the shelves or stand on an old shipping crate to restock the shelves. If you feel fatigued while restocking, ask another employee for help. A person at ground level can pass the bags of beans to the employee on the ladder. Make sure the bags are pushed to the back of the shelves to prevent them from falling off. Check the bags for damage and relay any problems to your manager. This will assure that our customers receive the freshest, tastiest coffee in the region. 3In the seating area, customers sometimes spill their coffee. You can prevent this small incident from turning into a safety issue by responding to any accidental spills promptly. Label the area with a “Wet Floor” sign while you find a mop in the back room. This prevents customers who are unaware of the spill from slipping on the wet surface. While cleaning the floor, you can ask another employee to replace the spilled drink for the customer. 4When your fellow employees are in the stockroom or the seating area, it can become very busy behind the counter. As a new employee, you may struggle to complete the customers’ orders quickly. Don’t let the pressure to be speedy interfere with your safety! Use caution as you make drinks and never forget about the many hot objects in your vicinity. The milk steamers and the coffee machines can cause serious burns if you touch them without proper protection. 5Once you grow more confident with your coffee-making skills and learn your way around the store, you will have many fun experiences as you get to know the regular customers. The job will become easier, but you still need to remain alert in order to protect yourself, your coworkers, and your customers. As you work, you’ll find it helpful to remember the three Cs: care, clean, and communicate. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll have a wonderful working experience at Cait’s Café!
