A) Douglas MacArthur's Farewell Speech to the Congress

1) In the opening paragraph of this speech, General McArthur Douglas states in the opening line that his speech is coming from a place of deep humility, while the last sentence states that his views are only that of a fellow American.

Who is General McArthur Douglas?

General McArthur Douglas was the United States general who during the second world war commanded the Southwest Pacific Theatre. He is known for the successful occupation of postwar Japan between 1950 and 1953.

2) McArthur's reason for addressing the Congress is to bid them farewell.

3) He applauded the "fighting sons", that is the American Soldiers stating that they have been "splendid in every way."

4) The famous line which General MacArthur uses at the end of the speech is "Old Soldiers never ide; they just fade away." At this point, The general tries to use Pathos (persuasion by emotional appeal) to elicit empathy and consideration for the work he has done.

B) Cal Ripken Jr.'s Farewell Speech to Baseball

5) He refers to the dream he had as a kid. This is the opening line and immediately captures the interest of the reader because it is the beginning of a story whose end is now a subject of suspense.

6) The purpose of this speech is to bid the Baseball industry farewell as well as to motivate others to dream and make a difference. In the third paragraph before the last, he stated that his dream is to share what he has learned and put a smile on the face of others.

7) He hopes to be remembered for living his dream. He makes this statement because he hopes to use his lives story and what he has learned in baseball to help others.

8) The styles of both orators differ. One way that it differs is in the way they organized their speech. Ripken used Monroe's Motivated Sequence to organize his speech whilst the General used a topical approach.
