how do you subtract fractions when the numerator is less than the other number's numerator. This is with the whole numbers.

The most simple fraction subtraction problems are those that have two proper fractions with a common denominator. That is, each denominator is the same. The process is just as it is for addition of fractions with like denominators, except you subtract! You subtract the second numerator from the first and keep the denominator the same.

The number at the top is called the numerator.

The number at the bottom is called the denominator.

For a fraction a/b, a is the numerator and b is the denominator.


You make the denominators (bottom numbers the same) by multiplying the fraction with the smaller denominator by a number that will make it equal to the denominator of the larger fraction - this is the LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR (LCD).


When the denominators are different it is slightly more complicated but still easy if you know how. You just need to make the bottom numbers the same.
